Preparation & Maintenance

To Prepare for your Spray Tan

Exfoliate before your spray tan to remove dry, flaky skin. Salt or sugar scrubs are not recommended to exfoliate. These scrubs contain oil which acts as a barrier between your skin and the tan causing the tan to wash off during the first rinse. Exfoliate by using your regular shower cleanser and a wash cloth or a loofah to remove the dead skin that is about to naturally shed itself. Skin replaces itself in cycles naturally every 28 days.   Twenty-five percent of skin is exfoliated each week, causing your tan to slowly wear away.  Sunless spray tans affect only the top 25 percent of the skin, so you can expect your tan to last for at least a week.

By removing dead, dry skin cells, you are effectively removing the barrier that would prevent the absorption of DHA bronzers into fresh, healthy skin cells.  Exfoliating allows the spray solution to penetrate deep into the skin and oxidize to a brilliant golden brown.  Spraying sunless products on dry flaky skin can cause the tan to appear less natural, and can result in uneven wear-off and fading.  Lack of exfoliation will also shorten the life of your sunless tan.

Note:  Any waxing should be done 1 to 2 days prior to your tanning session.  Manicures and pedicures can be done the day of your spray tan, but should be done prior to your spray tan appointment.

The Day of your Spray Tan Application

Please come to your appointment with your skin bare. No makeup, moisturizers or perfumes prior to your session until after your first rinse off.  Use deodorant sparingly.  For your spray tan session you may dress however you are comfortable. After your spray tan has been applied you should wear dark, loose fitting clothing.  Tight clothing can rub off or smear bronzers, especially around the knees, elbows and waist.  Just after the tan and for 8-12 hours you must not get wet.   Avoid activities that may cause you to sweat excessively and possibly cause streaking of your airbrushed tan.  Avoid lounging in chemically treated pools and spas for the life of the tan to prevent color from prematurely fading.  If you will be in a pool, jump in to cool off and get out and blot dry with a towel.  We suggest that when in either a beach or pool that you wear a thick waterproof sunscreen. The thicker the better! This will act as a barrier between your spray tan and the chlorine or salt water. Don't stay in too long as the tan will start to fade as soon as the sunscreen wears off.

8-12 hours after your spray tan you may rinse off the bronzer with water only. After 24 hours, you may return to your regular showering routine. For the life of the tan when exiting the shower, pool or beach you will want to pat your skin dry with a towel. Rubbing will cause the tan to streak.

To Maintain your Spray Tan

Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize!  Lowcountry Bronzes' beautiful tan fades as though it were from the sun in that it sheds off as it would if it were a natural suntan. Moisturizing constantly will stop the shedding process prolonging your tan significantly. We have found that when you moisturize your skin twice a day after your spray tan, your tan will last up to two weeks!
